You can advantage of Hold services for the books that are in our Main and Storage collections or have been checked out from the library by other patrons.

Holds can now be used in three ways:

  1. Place a hold on an item that is checked out. The item will be set aside for you when it is turned in and you will be notified by library staff.
  2. Place a hold on a book that is available and choose the Library Front Desk as your pickup location. Library staff will retrieve the book and notify you when it is ready to be checked out at the front desk.
  3. Place a hold on a book that is available and choose the After Hours Lockers as your pickup location. Library staff will retrieve the book and notify you with instructions when it is ready to be picked up at the lockers outside the library main entrance.

Frequently Asked Questions about Holds.

How many holds I can place?

Faculty, PhD and DMin students: 10 holds.
Master's, Adjunct Faculty and Fuller staff: 5 holds.

 Why can't I place a hold on a specific book I want?
Certain items such as books on reserve, items that are missing, and periodicals cannot be placed on hold. If you have a question about a specific item please email lib-info@fuller.edu.

How long does it take for me to get my request?
The library staff will make its best attempt to make a hold take a single business day for books that are available. However, due to demand this can change and the library asks that you allow up to 2-3 days for your hold to be retrieved and prepared for pickup.

What about books that are on Reserve?
Books that are on reserve are already held and ready to be checked out at the library front desk. They are not eligible for holds.

What about items that are in Storage or Closed Stacks?
Holds are now the primary (and the easiest!) way the library receives your closed or storage requests. Put in your closed stack request before making a trip so that we can have it ready for you when you arrive. Requests for periodicals in storage still need to be done in person. If you are already at the library feel free to make a closed stack request at the front desk.

Can I place a hold on a journal or periodical?
No. Current periodicals located in the Weyerhaeuser Reading Room on the first floor of the library are available to all patrons for library use only. All other periodicals are in storage and can be requested at the library front desk.

The book I want is checked out but I need it sooner than when it is due back. What can I do?
When you place a hold on a book that is checked out the patron that has the book will be unable to renew it but will have it for the remainder of their checkout period. If you have any questions about a specific item you need please contact lib-info@fuller.edu, and we'll be glad to assist you to explore other available options together.

I placed a book on hold and I received an email saying it is ready. Can I go pick it up right away?
If you chose the library front desk as your pickup location then the item will be ready to pickup and checkout at the front desk during library open hours upon receiving the email.
If you chose the after hours locker as your pickup location then you will receive two emails. The first will be a generic email notifying you that the book is on hold for you and the second follow up email will be from library staff with specific instructions on your pickup locker. When you receive this second email the book will be ready to pickup at the locker indicated by staff.

I can't pickup books from the library or the locker. Can someone pick them up for me?
No. The library requires you to be present to check out books. Locker pickup is also limited to the person that has checked out the books. If you are unable to pickup books in Pasadena, and live outside a 50 mile radius from the Pasadena campus, please consider using our Books-by-Mail service.
The only exception to this is for faculty proxy borrowers. If you are a faculty member and want more information about setting up a proxy borrower please contact lib-info@fuller.edu.

Is there any way to get information about holds I have placed?
Yes. You can see the latest information on your requests by logging into your library account. This can be done by clicking here or by clicking the orange button labeled 'My Account' located on the top right of the library homepage.
